The Act One Theatre Company was formed in 1995 when the company mounted a highly successful production of "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat" at St Paul's church in Withington.

This was followed by a production of "Oliver" in 1996, which was staged at the Capitol Theatre, Didsbury (and which incidentally was the last production to be performed before the theatre was sadly torn down). The company then returned to its original home and staged a further 7 highly successful productions within St Pauls Church, Withington. This in itself was a massive achievement with staging, lighting and sound systems being brought in to create a large auditorium.

For the 2006 production of "The Scarlet Pimpernel", the company moved to Chads Theatre in Cheadle Hulme. This was the first time the group had performed in a working theatre since Oliver, 10 years previous. Although the transition brought on many challenges of its own, the end result was hailed by audiences as our best yet. Auditions and rehearsals continue to take place at St Paul's Parish Hall. The 2007 cabaret was also performed at Chads, although due to essential renovations at the theatre, the summer 2007 production of Jekyll & Hyde was staged at the nearby Playhouse Theatre in Cheadle Hulme.

Although entry is by audition, this is simply to determine vocal strength and range rather than to exclude anyone from involvement in a production. However, production values are extremely high and the company works to a very professional standard.
